SEASON OF THE ROSE: ESSENTIALS OF THE SUFI PATH

This year’s Season of the Rose: Sufi Summer School l will be held in Portland, Oregon, returning to the beautiful campus of Lewis & Clark College.

All are invited to join us as we continue our exploration of the Essentials of the Sufi Path, including themes of breath, light, beauty, guidance, manner, meditation, poetry, music, zikr and the nature of Reality.

We will gather together for large group sessions, as well as in smaller groups, each day, and for suhbat & zikr each night. Faculty include Pir Zia Inayat-Khan, Devi Tide, Gayan Macher, Tasnim Hermila Fernandez, Deepa Gulrukh Patel, Jacob Ellenberg, Amida Cary, and Special Guest Cheikh Sufi of the Mouridiyya Order of Sufis.

BIOGRAPHIES

Pir Zia Inayat-Khan, familiarly known as Sarafil Bawa, is a teacher of Sufism in the lineage of his grandfather, Hazrat Inayat Khan. He received his Ph.D. in Religion from Duke University. His books include Saracen Chivalry: Counsels on Valor, Generosity, and the Mystical Quest and Mingled Waters: Sufism and the Mystical Unity of Religions. Pir Zia is president of The Inayati Order and founder of Suluk Academy. Now based in Richmond, Virginia, Pir Zia frequently travels. His schedule can be found at www.pirzia.org/calendar/.

Gayan Macher is a companion and guide to those called to the courageous path of love. He has been a teacher of Sufism for over 35 years. He headed The Inayati Order’s curriculum project that was the basis for Suluk Academy, and has been a lead teacher with Suluk since its inception. He leads retreats and Inner Guidance groups around the country. Gayan also has a 20 year collaboration with Taj Inayat in shaping the teachings of Hazrat Inayat Khan for the contemporary Western seeker. Currently they co-lead New Rain On-line, a worldwide community of support for people committed to spiritual practice. Professionally Gayan consults to corporate executives on matters of human relations. He is also a singer—songwriter. Gayan lives in Fairfax, California.gayanm521@gmail.com; gayanmusic.com.

Devi Tide is the Head of the Sufi Healing Order in North America, and has been a Sufi teacher and guide for over thirty years. A deep teacher of meditation and healing practices as tools for inner development, she has offered seminars, lectures and retreats to medical professionals, educators, sociologists, and lay people the world over, regularly teaching in Australia, New Zealand, and throughout North America. She has spoken at the Parliament of World Religions, NYC Climate Change March, Harvard Mind-Body Institute, and was an invited delegate of the United Nations Millennium Peace Summit. She stands for that which supports humanity in generating conditions for wholeness, joy and well-being. Devi makes her home in Seattle, Washington.sufihealingorder.org

Born in Mexico City, Tasnim Hermila Fernandez awakened to the inner life of spirit in her late teens-early twenties, beginning a lifelong immersion in the study of world religions and mystical traditions. Tasnim Hermila was initiated into the way of the Sufis by Hazrat Pir Vilayat Inayat Khan in June 1971 and serves the Inayati Order as a Representative and Center Leader, a Healing Conductor, and as a Minister (Cherag) and a Siraj (Ordaining Minister) of the Universal Worship. She is recognized and acclaimed as one of the foremost leaders and mentors of the Dances of Universal Peace. Tasnim Hermila brings all of these aspects together as the spiritual director of the Church of All in Burbank, California.

Deepa Gulrukh Patel is a campaigner and facilitator with a special interest in the arts, interdisciplinary collaboration, contemplation, diversity, and equality, working with organizations like the BBC, ActionAid and the Arts Council of England. Deepa has been a student of the inner life since her teens and is the director of the Inayati Order’s Zenith Summer Camp in the Swiss Alps. She currently works on a variety of projects with Syrian refugees in Jordan at the Zaatari Refugee camp and is part of the faculty at THNK, a creative leadership school in Amsterdam. Volunteering is important part of her life and in the United Kingdom she is Chair of Tamasha Theatre Company and The Loss Foundation, a charity that supports people bereaved by cancer. Jacob Ellenberg has been a student of Sufism for over 20 years. In additionto working with organizations and projects that explore the intersections of storytelling, games, technology, and the transformation of self, Jacobactively teaches meditation in a variety of contexts. For the past 4 summers, he has co-facilitated with Gulrukh Patel, the young adult group at the Inayati Order’s Zenith Institute Summer Camp in the Swiss Alps. Jacob holds a BA from New York University in Mysticism, Storytelling,Organizational Behavior. Jacob lives in Los Angeles, California.

Amida Cary is Director of the Inayati Order’s Retreat Concentration and its Retreat Guide Training Program, working in concert with an international network of experienced retreat guides and trainee mentors. Her primary focus is encouraging all involved to enter the transformative depths of the retreat process. Amida is an experienced retreat guide herself and has worked closely with Pir Vilayat, Aziza Scott, and Pir Zia. She collaborated with Pir Vilayat for many years editing his curriculum and establishing the website www.universel.net. She is also a founder of Suluk Academy, has served as Suluk faculty, and is the Inayati Order’s Regional Representative for Northern California. Cheikh Sufi is the founder of the Ancient Sufi Institute of Alchemy in the USA and founder of Matiabul Fawzani Institute, an online study system in Sufism, Arabic and Woolof. He provides the services of Reiki Mastership and Sufi initiation, spiritual guidance and blessing, talisman making, and dream and IChing analyze, Purifications and Healing.
