The "New Story" / Swimme and Berry

Dear friends,

If you listened to Bawa’s presentation online last Sunday you heard Sr Miriam speak about her work with Thomas Berry and Brian Swimme, and the need for a “New Story” about life for our time.

I want to let you know of a CD (also a book) put out by Brian Swimme and Mary Evelyn Tucker in 2011 entitled Journey of the Universe and published by Yale University Press. Find it at www.JourneyoftheUniverse.org (also the site of podcasts, etc.)

In it Brian takes us through our cosmic-geo-bio genesis and “human transformation.” It is brilliant and beautiful. (Recommended by Ursula Goodenough, Thomas Lovejoy and Gus Speth - and by me.) Highly recommended for understanding and unifying new scientific knowledge and a mystical awareness.

My mother and I watched it together in 2012 which happened to be only a short while before her passing. It moved us both greatly, especially seeing it together. We paused it so that it became three parts that gave us time to digest what was being shared.

Dear Beautiful spiritual family.

As everyone describes such inspiration, my heart breaks.

It breaks for the aching gap in history science and humanity, in these accounts.

These stories are told again and again while skipping over tens of milenia of history and evolution.
This account again skips directly from evolution of upright humans to Greek and Egyptian logic and civilization, skipping thousands of years of art, history, culture, science, Ceremony, spirituality Medicine, Democracy, cultivation and yes even civilization that was present in human hunter gather populations and Indigenous evolutions of humanity all over the earth.

Many of these cultures still exist as unbroken linages with oral historical accounts of all of these contributions to humanity, some of which, endure today …

By colonial error, these have not been studied by science and are not written in texts. Despite hundreds of years of concerted effort to erase these cultures, they prevail yet are rarely mentioned, rarely studied or explored by Achedimia or science for their rich ,enduring secrets of humanity, equanimity with nature and tenacity.

The missing information we need to heal our world, has been kept alive and is available to us in these unstudied cultures.

I am prevailing upon my spiritual family who may or may not have connected with this film compilation of Earth’s history, to include a perspective of those missing years, told by Indigenous peoples of North America.

I invite everyone to hear one of our dedicated oral historians offer perspectives from the point of view of peoples who have remained faithful to their covenant with nature for some 20 thousand ( or more)years.

This oral history of North America has been made widely available for purpose of healing in these times.

It is told by this respected oral history keeper on the Friday of each month closest to the 20th. from 6 to 9 pm EST ,to allow ample time for discussion and questions.

It is the story kept in the petroglyphs close to our home here in Canada.

there will also be reference to Trinity teachings, Colors, seasons and directions.

It is happening tomorrow evening.

This is the best best gift I could think to give to my spiritual family in these times, at this moment, in the context of considering this film.

There is one more helpful resource.
This is an example of the leadership of Indigenous youth in Canada today.
I must preface regarding two details.
Even the finest Elder Scholar can not have all details from all perspectives.
We need both sources for a fulsome view.
1.He is speaking of us as mostly extinct today.
In fact,
We are the fastest growing demographic in Canada.
2.He speaks of British successful defence of Canada’s borders in the war of 1812.
I must clarify that the British allied with Indigenous warriors for that success.
It was Indigenous Terrain navigation and tactical skill that defended the borders.
This part of history is not highlighted in the general education system.
We have Canada today because of that victory.

Many thanks, this gap is important to be aware of.

One piece of it is the tremendous impact that European contact with Indigenous Americans had, and has continued to have since 1492 on the West - both in what is now the U.S. and Canada and in Europe and through that the world. Much of that history has been buried since the 1830s. If anyone is interested in what has been learned, and in what might continue to be learned in the practical sphere of relating to each other and the Earth by applying Indigenous values - essentially Sufi values - to politics, economics, relating to the physical environment (“the Earth”) and education, 12 of us have just published in 4 volumes Honoring the Circle: Ongoing Learning From American ]Indians on Politics and Society. It does not directly deal with spirituality, but rather is applied spirituality to the practicality of relationships (in Indigenous terms, kinship). The first two volumes are on what has been and still is being learned, the last two are about what it might well be good to still learn in very practical ways with examples. The books are available on Amazon. A shorter parallel work is by Glenn Aparicio Parry, Original Politics: Making Politics Sacred Again, tracing the spiraling cycles of U.S. history and urging that the country return to functioning, as it did in its early years, as a blend of the European and the Indian.
