# Passing of Beloved Atum O'Kane

Dear Soul Friends & Beloved Community,
I am writing this letter to let you know that Atum is in the final days/hours of hospice care. He is surrounded by his family and being held in love. He has regularly spoken with immense gratitude about his life journey and the way it unfolded. He feels enormously blessed and thankful for the path he has shared with all of you.
Atum’s love of teaching and being with the Spiritual Guidance Community has been a central piece in the mandala of his life. I know the wisdom of his teachings will continue to guide us and his presence will remain vividly alive in our hearts. Atum often spoke about how the real gift of his teaching was the joy of friendships and the deep community that was created, shared, cultivated, and lived. He is profoundly glad you have the gift of each other and he encourages you to continue to gather as a community and to continue his work.
I know this news will come as a shock to many of you. Atum’s health drastically declined in the last few days. In typical Atum fashion his meeting and sharing with the hospital chaplain and harp player were filled with joy. He instantly connected to them and brought both of them to tears.
I remember Atum talking about the final spiritual practices of his close friends and teachers. How the practice(s) they did held the simplified essence of all they learned and longed for. The practice I’ve witnessed Atum doing the most during these last 6 months is the complimenting and naming of qualities he sees in people. Everywhere Atum went he would reflect back a soul quality he saw in whoever he interacted with. Seeing the beauty in others and naming a quality or contribution that they embody, evoke, or offer the world is a practice the world longs for. At this time, you may want to take a few minutes to name the soul qualities that Atum embodied. I also invite you to remember the qualities that Atum saw and named in you.
As a family, this is all the news we are able to offer at this time. We welcome your prayers for Atum as he makes this transition.

P.S. I apologize for leaving such an abrupt message earlier. I expected to send an immediate follow-up once I gathered more background information but I still haven’t heard more, so I’ll just add the little I know. Atum contracted a parasitic infection some months ago while visiting his son Emmanuel in Uganda. The treatment he received seemed to help, but before long the systemic effects of the infection became more severe and he required powerful medications. I last saw him along with a few old friends when he visited the Bay Area at the end of August. He was clearly weakened but was in good spirits and expected to continue his travel and teaching schedule in a couple of weeks. However, soon after he returned home to Spokane his condition worsened, then required hospitalization, and in time he entered hospice care. In his last days he was moved to the home of a dear friend, and, with all his children present, passed peacefully from this realm.
